On December 22, 2008, the Coast Guard awarded a contract to expand the core capabilities of Nationwide AIS. The core capabilities now include designing and developing increased AIS transmit and receive coverage for three Coast Guard Sectors: Delaware Bay, Philadelphia, Hampton Roads, Virginia, and Mobile, Alabama. These new developments build on the Rescue 21 modernization project and enhance current NAIS capabilities by extending receive coverage out to 50 nm, and allow for transmit capability out to 24 nm. Such expanded capability will allow for increased MDA, as well as enhance the safety for the maritime user, thus allowing for virtual aids to navigation and AIS-based safety and weather-warning text messages.
